St. Joseph School follows the curriculum guidelines of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Students receive instruction in religion, reading, language, social studies, science, spelling, mathematics, handwriting, physical education, art, music and computer. Our graduates are well qualified for acceptance into the local private Catholic high schools.
All students receive religious instruction daily. Parents are expected to participate in the faith development of their children. Students in 2nd grade receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. Special arrangements are made for transfer students who have not received the Sacraments.
Homework is an important part of a child's education. Homework reinforces what students have learned in class and is sometimes class work that has not been completed. The amount of homework is based on what the average child can accomplish with concentrated attention in the time prescribed.
Grades 1 & 2: 45 minutes
Grades 3 & 4: 60 minutes
Grades 5 & 6: 90 minutes
Grades 7 & 8: 120 minutes
Homework is the work of the student and may include reading, study and written assignments. Parents can help by supervising, showing interest and providing a quiet time and place for the completion of assignments.
In the primary grades children should read aloud every evening. Independent reading is very important and should be included in homework time.
Every Wednesday the oldest or only child of each family will be given an envelope to bring home including calendars, schedules and other information. Parents should check the envelope each Wednesday and sign and return it the following day.
Uniforms are worn from the first day of the school year until the last except for special "free dress" days. The Parent/Student Handbook has details and sources for required uniforms. |
